What an experience to be able to spend the night in such a piece of history! Fouriesburg is a hidden gem in the Eastern Free State, would recommend it to any traveller!

My wife and daughter and I stayed at the Pophuisie for one night on our way to our next destination.

The accommodation was clean but the facility is old and not well maintained. Not recommended. Expected more.

We enjoyed the stay. Die Pophuisie offers 1 night bookings and does not have a 2 night minimum stay limit. Response to inquiries was quick and questions were answered well. Paula is also very accommodating and would even wait until 11pm to come and unlock if needed. It's 100 m from the main road on the way to the Lesotho border, but the "traffic noise" as mentioned below in a previous review was not noticed or cause for concern at all. If you want to experience the "essence" of Fouriesburg, this is the right place to stay for 1-2 nights. The unit is nicely decorated inside which still gives the old fashioned feel with pictures on the walls, original wooden floors, and lots of books available for reading. It is clean and tidy. Thoroughly enjoyed the flipfile in the unit with original photos. Could see it was put together with a lot of effort and hard work. The entire Free State history of the Anglo-Boer War is well described along with the history of the entire town as well as the Pophuisie itself. If you are a history buff, this will please you and will give you a good nostalgic peasant feeling and reawaken a sense of pride within you! No TV is available but didn't need it at all. All the basic amenities were available. Even coffee, sugar and fresh milk were provided along with towels. It's 1 minute walk from a cozy family restaurant. Highly recommended for a small family on their way to AfriSki! Very close to Clarens and Golden Gate, but cheaper destination for accommodation. And we missed the big snow in Fouriesburg and area by 1 day! Will have to go back in the future to see again.

Thank you very much. The Pophuisie was a special experience. It's uniquely furnished with all the old things. I can definitely recommend Die Pophuisie! We slept warm and safe and relaxed. I will definitely use Die Pophuisie again if we need accommodation in the beautiful Free State landscape.

"Reasonable accommodation for an overnight stay, but not comfortable for a longer stay."

We had a discussion at the Pophuisie in Fouriesburg recently. Unfortunately, the stay did not meet our expectations. We were booked for 5 nights there, but then we only stayed there for 3 nights. The house is very nicely restored, but unfortunately in the wrong place for people who want to rest. It's definitely not a comfortable vacation spot for a few days. We would recommend it for a one night stay, but certainly not for more than one night. The house is unfortunately located two yards from the main entrance of Lesotho (Caledonspoort border post), Clarens, Ficksburg and Bethlehem, with the result that we couldn't sleep at all the first night because of all the noise from trucks, taxis, music, people, etc. Because we didn't want to lose money, we were forced to sleep there for three nights. We then stayed on a farm nearby for the fourth and fifth night. The cottage is not holiday friendly at all. There is a lot of dust everywhere, no fan in the master bedroom in the sweltering heat when we were there, no comfortable and private barbecue area. The owner was very friendly and understood when we explained our need for rest.

Although the beautiful sandstone house is old, everything is beautifully clean and tidy. Paula is a wonderful hostess. I called her after hours about a key I mistakenly thought was broken and she was quick to help and despite my mistake she was still her friendly self! We walked through the town and had a great night's sleep. Will stay there again tomorrow!

As a stop over at Fouriesburg on the way into Lesotho, Die Pophuisie is ideal, all year round! It's a beautiful place that offers quality for money - as is Wegkomkans, Paula's other venue across the street. Friendly, professional and personal service by the owner. Can recommend this place to all.
