I have spent 16 years in the hospitality industry - 7 of those as GM of several hotels in the then Protea Group. Never, ever have I heard of a group account being handed out to every guest on arrival, much less without discussing it with the organiser. Rooms were changed around without notification - single guests in rooms with double beds and couples in rooms with twin beds, the direct opposite of how it was booked.

The bedding in our room was not clean. Some of the glasses were missing. The staff was very helpful, but you have to ask when you need something although I asked upfront for everything.

Before anything else I just want to pass on a big thank you to Charmaine ─ she went out of her way to try and cover all the blunders. She waited for us with a big smile after they closed at 5pm and helped us with everything she possibly could. But here come all the caveats: Our room reservation was wrong, the pictures are misleading, the whole place looks neglected, water stops in the middle of a shower. Nothing is available after five o'clock, so no wood or grill to grill something. Due to their mistake, we were quickly put in the honeymoon room (which is probably supposed to be their very best) but it has cracked floor tiles, no hairdryer, dirty candle holders and blown light bulbs. Luckily we weren't on our honeymoon because that would be a tragic start to a marriage! The management of this place will have to pull their socks up very high before we will even consider going there again.

Would have liked more private cottage, I was not aware that the cottage is shared. Had to quiet my little boy every now and then, because we could hear the people next door through the closed door that divides the house into 2. Also boiler did not work and deck needs work on!

Then the Fynbos Golf Club is certainly for you. Location-wise it is not their fault that they are located 4 to 5 km away from the main road, reachable via a bumpy thing that cannot be called “road”, but is a broad hardened earth path that makes one fear that the car actually breaks down midway. At the time of our stay, there were constructions going on, so I hope the adventurous situation has improved. When arriving, we immediately noticed that is was indeed a golf club - wide endless golf course that only end where the ocean begins. Actually a lovely sight and impressive at night due to a sky filled with stars and at sunrise when the endless sky lights up. The scenery is impressive. But not a soul to be seen. After calling a mobile number, we met the first and last person for the next two days. We got handed the keys and the information that the kitchens were closed and no real braai area available. But there were restaurants around. Our rooms were spacious, the balconies were comfortably large, too. All rooms were well equipped with towels, coffee, tea, sugar and a kettle - so the basic commodities were available. About the cleanliness we cannot say anything as we didn’t meet a soul for the duration of our stay, so there was no one looking after the rooms in our absence. Not something one would actually expect from a club of that impressive structure. We had the whole huge complex for ourselves. Restaurant and main building were closed down, but the indoor pool was open 24/7 and we made ample use of that. A nice feature. Truly memorable was the lovely black cat who resides at the golfclub too. After we had proven ourselves worthy of her cautious notice she fulfilled the duties of a caring landlady better than the absent human staff. To her we extend our gratitude for the company, our most heartfelt thanks and recommendations. We wish her and her kittens a healthy and long life being valued by her human caretakers and treated kindly as she deserves. She is the sole reason this is not a single star review.

We enjoyed our visit there and would love to choose Fynbos Golf Club again one day. Was just a little disappointed because upon our arrival they should have first checked the room we booked. clean wash Unfortunately it wasn't clean so we were in another room, but it was nice.

Dis hartseer dat hierdie pragtige plek so swak bestuur word. Sedert ons 'n jaar gelede daar was (toe alles nuut en skoon was), is die gordyne sekerlik nog nooit gewas nie. Die stort was so vuil, dat ek moes vra dat dit skoongemaak moes word voor ons dit kon gebruik. Die kamer lyk afgeleef en baie goed is stukkend. In 3 dae wat ons daar was, is ons drommetjie nie eenkeer uitgegooi nie. Dit is 'n hartseer saak, dit is werklik so mooi daar, maar duidelik gee die bestuur nie genoeg om nie.

"The hotel room is small and cramped and has a view of the parking area. Shower leaking. Music from the bar is rock hard."

Not at all what we expected. The hotel room is cramped if you look at the parking area. Music from bar and restaurant kliphard dialed 11:55 to put it down. On top of that, the men are standing outside talking loudly and waiting for the man to take them to the golf's first hole. Booked three days but decided to leave instead. No help or inquiry from manager as to why we left.

"Disappointing stay and not value for money."

We booked the 2 bedroom Farm Stay because our 2 small children (5 and 3 years old) could not stay alone in their own room and we were told that they could not sleep on 1 mattress on the floor in our room not. When we arrived we were very disappointed with the quality of the unit. The walls were dirty and there was also dust/dirt in the corners of the living room and bathroom. The towels had rust marks on them. Also when we used the towel on the rail in the bathroom the whole hand rail fell off - luckily no one was hurt. Furthermore, there were no power points or bedside lamps or hangers (in the built-in wardrobes) in the 2 bedrooms and no mirror in the entire unit. We suspect that the unit was once a farm worker's cottage, but don't think any effort has been made to convert it into a guest unit. In addition, it wasn't until we read the welcome pack that we saw that we were responsible for cleaning the unit before we left, otherwise we would have to pay another R300 cleaning fee. It was nowhere in the reservation that we had to clean ourselves and it then made sense why the unit was not completely clean. We only wanted to stay for one night in a clean, tidy place as we would be traveling on to family the next day but we regret choosing Fynbos Golf Club's Farm Stay unit. It was not worth our R1000 and we would not advise anyone to book there.

Fynbos Golf Club has very helpful staff who go the extra mile for their guests. They take the initiative and send customers directions to the accommodation on WhatsApp which is a bit remote and with no extra effort made our check-in time later for us because we had transport problems. We and some of our friends who also stayed there had a great stay and would recommend it to others.

We booked the honeymoon suite thought we'd have a balcony ... but we didn't. As the club closed at 14:00 already, we spent the rest of the afternoon and evening in the room with our own cheese and wine. We felt really lonely from 14:00. I don't think we would have found anyone had we experienced any problems. And the Monday was a holiday. Would have expected the club/restaurant to at least still open til 8 pm. Not again. Maybe self-catering accommodation would have been a better option.

The manager was very helpful and provided good service. The two bedroom units are spotless and very neat with beautiful views and a nice and modern style. Nothing was lacking and the place is well equipped.

Were supposed to stay 2 days however there was a tournament on the go and it was totally unsuitable for a couple. We couldn't use any of the amenities due to drunk men making it unpleasant. We were moved twice to get away from the raucousness - at additional cost I might add. If it wasn't for the terrible dirt road I would have left immediately. We stayed 1 night only because I couldn't drive on the bad road at night with my sedan. Not ideal for our wedding anniversary trip!

Enjoyed the stay. Very neat and I liked how we were kept up to date via WhatsApp. Good service. Would return to the little houses any time. Only suggestion they could look at for the future would maybe be aircon. Even though there were ceiling fans, it got quite hot at night. Other than that no complaints, beautiful place. Except for the grave road from the N2 to Eersteriverstrand which I would not recommend for a low vehicle, it's definitely worth the effort to break away to Fynbos Golf Club. The rooms are well equipped, good food at the restaurant. Rooms were not completely soundproof against the ceiling, due toe grass roof. Except for that, I'll go again.

We booked for 7 nights at the golf club itself. Unfortunately, we did not stay in the self-catering units as it was already booked. The surroundings are beautiful and the beach is a 1 or 2 km drive away. The personnel are very friendly! No issues there. The rooms are okay, but there is no bar fridge. I would not recommend staying there for more than 2 days as nothing can be kept cold. The TV is very small. Way too small for the room and mounted above a cupboard which means you need to keep your arm above your head the whole time if you want to change channels or adjust the volume. It also seemed that a neighbour's TV remote worked on ours as the volume kept on being changed. The service we received was extremely poor. On arrival, we were shown to our room only, with no additional information given about open and closing times, where the pool area is or any related information about the surroundings. Most of the information we got was only after speaking to the barman. Rooms do not get clean daily which means; the dustbin overflowed, the soap dispenser does not get refilled (it was about empty when we arrived), dead bugs does not get swept away (Seems like the room was fogged just before we arrived as the fog canister was still in the room), and toilet paper does not get replaced, coffee/tea cups does not get washed, tea coffee sugar and milk does not get replaced. In fact, when we arrived, the milk was given in an old plastic water bottle about 1/4 full of milk. We asked for our room to be cleaned as we went out for the whole day. When we got back at 4 pm our room was still being cleaned. Nothing was replenished in the room. A second time we asked for the room to be cleaned as we went out again for the day. The room was not cleaned. I just asked for new cups and to leave the room as is. We got so frustrated with having to ask for things all the time that we actually just stopped. The closest shop is 9 km away on a dirt road. The dirt road is extremely poor and can't be good for any normal car. If you want to buy water, cold drinks, or whatever, you need to take that drive - I did mention the room does not have a fridge so we could not keep anything cold. The restaurant on the estate closes at 6 PM even if they have guests staying in a non-self-catering room, which by the way, was fully booked over the time we were there. On the 1st of January, we wanted to have a breakfast, only to find out the whole club was closed for the day. The doors closed, lights off and no one at reception to answer questions or to help guests. Luckily we had chips that we could snack on as we just did not have the energy to drive the dirt road again. One evening, just before closing time, we went for an early dinner at the club. They had no buns, no mayonnaise and apparently no chips. We opted for a more expensive dish (double the price) just so we can eat something. When we got the dish they served chips! We were seriously unhappy but kept to ourselves as we were happy to actually get food. The bad service, no fridge where we could keep drinks or food from going off and the very weird business hours of the restaurant left us with such a sour taste, that we decided to leave a day earlier. It came to our attention that the people working there were fill-in's as the previous people left without giving a proper handover. As mentioned the personnel were very friendly, but unfortunately they have no idea how to run the establishment. We understand that they were in a pickle, but I just feel it is very unfair towards us as clients to have paid the full amount and received very poor services. The only thing we got was apology after apology. We at least paid double for what we have actually received. This place will most definitely not see us again.

While the staff was very friendly and helpful and made the accommodation pleasant, it was very disappointing that everything was closed on 1 January 2017 - no breakfast, no staff - nothing. Although we inquired about it the day before, we weren't told that it would be like that. Our rooms weren't serviced on the 1st of Jan and we ran out of coffee, milk and toilet paper. When we went for dinner on the 2nd of Jan we were told that the kitchen has already closed. For an institution in the hospitality industry it's totally unacceptable. The facilities was very good though, and the general experience was pleasant. When we experienced problems with our car, they went out of their way to help us. Remember though: it is a golf estate so that's about the only thing you can do there.
