The kitchen is well-equipped. The living area has a TV with Openview. The living area leads out onto a covered verandah, which has patio furniture and a built-in braai area. Firewood is provided. Pets are welcome (the cottage is securely fenced). The cottage is approximately 200 metres from the owners house. The farm is 90 hectares and borders Lesotho.
Shepherd's Cottage can accommodate 2 guests. It has a queen size bed, an en-suite bathroom, a kitchen, a TV, and a living room. The cottage also has a verandah and built-in braai.
Hilltop Cottages and Shepherds Cottage are about 400 m apart, so they are completely private. Both cottages are fenced and are pet friendly. 1 km of the Mzimude river flows through the farm, and there is a dam on the farm.
The farm is off the grid which means that it is not affected by loadshedding.

18 guests' feedbackThe cottage is well equipped and comfortable, though quite small. I wouldn't recommend large people stay here as the bathroom is really tiny. It's a lovely space for dogs, and there is a fence and gates if you need them. It was raining and cold, so we couldn't use the lovely outside space, but we did use the indoor fire. There is a lovely dam with a pool house on the property. I wish the weather had been better so we could have enjoyed this more. There had been a lot of rain, and the road to the place was very slippery. I saw a couple of cars being pulled out of ditches, so drive slowly when it's wet!
Stephen made us feel very much at home. The accommodation was comfortable and the views breathtakingly beautiful. It was snowing but the fireplace kept us wonderfully warm. Stephen, thanks so much for all the free wood. Walking opportunity in the field and along the river. Saw a lot of birds. Will definitely want to stay there again.
A most peaceful and comfortable stay. Off the grid so no worries about load shedding.
Does not have premium DStv as stated in advertisement. Only has Openview and no internet.
Open space with a lovely area to relax and have a view of the awesome mountains.
We had a wonderful stay in Shephards Cottage with our two woofs. Thank you very much for all the wood, with the cold weather we just used the indoor fireplace as well. Will definitely visit again.
We really enjoyed our getaway weekend. It is safe, private and the scenery is beautiful. There is plenty to do on the farm if you like hiking, fishing or swimming in the clear mountain river and pond. The fireplace was a bonus for the cold nights and the owners made us feel very welcome. Will definitely go again.

Everything about this Cottage ticked the boxes. We could only spend one night, but it will remain our our list for a longer, return visit. Hosts were awesome too!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Shepherd's Cottage. The hosts were very welcoming and we had a wonderful walk on the farm. The sky is clear at night and perfect for any stargazer currently trapped in a concrete jungle. We'll definitely visit again!
The views, the farm feel, the very neat and clean little shepherd's hut. We were pleasantly surprised and had a wonderful stay. The dogs were safe behind mesh wire in a neat garden. It was lovely to view the farm animals from the veranda. Horses, chickens, sheep and cattle. There was enough wood to light the fireplace: it was a cold, rainy, weekend. The accommodation exceeded all our expectations and would love to spend a few days again, we can highly recommend it.
After the death of a loved one, I found fresh mountain air, silence for the soul, beauty for the eye and peace for the heart.
Was warmly and kindly received. The residence was clean and tidy and more than enough braai wood at your disposal! Fresh farm eggs at your disposal to kick off the day. Then look at the beautiful Drakensberg (Lesotho) with all the beauty around and in front of it. It really was worth every penny and we would stay there again with our 4 furry babies, they enjoyed the farm life (sheep / chickens / cattle / horses) so much. Thank you for sharing a part of your every day.
It was a very relaxing atmosphere, quiet and peaceful and plenty of fresh air that makes one want to just sit and do nothing but admire the views as well as watching the sheep and horses grazing nearby! The river that runs along the border of the farm was spectacular! If you need a break and rest, it's recommended.
My lady and I were at the end of our honeymoon and decided on impulse to go to Underberg from Umhlanga. We chose the venue primarily because it has a king-size bed. What we couldn't have known when we booked was the breathtaking view that would greet us. The owner of Farraway Farm, Stephen, is right when he said, "It's hard to read here. The mountains demand to be looked at." With it's spot on a hill there is a vast and unimpeded view of the flat plain showing open grazing fields, a swimming dam and mountains in the distance fit for any Lord of The Rings reenactment. There is a swing chair that allows you a comfy spot from which to take all this in. The silence of this place is all encompassing. Serene would be the right word. As an unexpected treat, it snowed the night we were there and we awoke to white capped mountains marking the Lesotho border. Awesome. You don't need a 4X4 to get there but be prepared for a 20+ minute dirt road drive to get there.
Very peaceful and nice. Very neat and clean. Everything was perfect. The house was spotless when we got there. Couldn't believe how beautiful the view was.
Hilltop Cottage is on the edge of a relatively huge valley with the Southern Drakensberg as the backdrop, a distance of about 5 - 8 km. The view is breathtaking, snow on the hight sots and a mountain stream whispering in the foreground, perfect recipe if you need to get away from a busy work environment. Comfortable, clean, and neat accommodation and Stepen, the owner, went out of his way to make sure we were comfortable. This place is a must for nature lovers.
