We are set within the 1000 ha Ndlovumzi Nature Reserve with giraffe, zebra, kudu, nyala, warthog, eland, waterbuck, black-backed jackal and more, and there are crocodiles and hippos in the main stream of the Olifants. The adventurous can explore the island, potholes and waterfalls right in front of Little Carthage
There are two modest chalets, a 4 sleeper and a 2 sleeper, which are only available booked together as one unit guaranteeing you privacy and exclusive use of the outdoor kitchen, pool and braai facilities. The owner and family live on the property but separate from the guest area.
The Loft Chalet can accommodate 4 guests and features a queen-size bed downstairs and a loft bedroom with twin beds. There is a bathroom with a shower. The ladder to the loft is very steep and not suitable for very small children or older folk. There is a kitchenette with a medium fridge, a kettle, and basic cutlery and crockery.
The Rondavel sleeps two and is a very basic but neat open-plan room. There is a queen-size bed and a bathroom with a shower that is separated only by a half wall. Cooking and catering need to be done in the outside kitchen. It is not available to rent on its own, only for those hiring both the Loft Chalet and the Rondavel together.
The pool deck is right on the river with a swimming pool, a braai area and an eight-seater table under shade. The open kitchen has an eight-seater table under thatch, a full-size fridge-freezer, a gas oven and stove, microwave and cutlery and crockery.

32 guests' feedbackWe spent a wonderful long weekend at Little Carthage and enjoyed our stay in every respect, especially lounging around the pool in the Lowveld heat. The view is fantastic, and there are pleasant hikes to be had. The accommodation is very comfortable with a real "bush vibe". Heather left no stone unturned to ensure that we were comfortable at all times. We will definitely return to this slice of paradise.
Nice to just go and switch off. The surroundings are very beautiful and the children really enjoyed the walk in the Olifants River.
Heather took very good care of us, our two dogs really enjoyed it! We will definitely visit again.
The staff is very friendly and helpful. The place is clean and tidy and the kitchen has everything you need. We really enjoyed it. The road is passable but would be easier with a tall vehicle such as a bakkie. We were able to get there with our Opel Crossland. Don't let the road put you off! This is definitely something you want to experience!
It was such a nice place to stay and it is very well equipped for a nice holiday. The place had everything we needed and the braai area was cleaned daily (and quite early). The view was breathtaking, the rooms were neat and clean. Heather, was such a wonderful hostess! We didn't want to leave, and will definitely want to come again.
Suggestion is to insert handrails at the steep ascent for the elderly. Another suggestion is to expand the cutlery a bit with a whisk and such. But the location, friendliness, river make it all worth it. Thank you so much, Heather, for your hospitality. She was kind enough to call us when they spotted a small crocodile in the river.
Please this a beautiful serene place and a must see. The owner and staff received us well and made sure that our stay is out of this world and let me not mentioned the animals it was impressive am definitely coming back soon.
We could completely switch off. Definitely a gem for older children and adults. We spent hours exploring the river, and driving around looking for game. Evenings spent around the campfire and mornings at the Look-out point ensured reconnection with our souls.
Excellent place to stay to get away from the city. The pool is a plus for the hot days.
The bathroom needs a good scrub. Although the pool and deck got cleaned everyday, nothing else got washed, or swept or cleaned during our stay. The host however was an absolute gem and the location absolutely amazing.

The accommodation is very comfortable and the owner friendly and makes a lot of effort. The fire is cleaned and re-fired every day. Which is very nice. Quiet and peaceful except for the monkeys and baboons who come to visit. Good place to be if you are looking for rest. The place is on the banks of the Olifants River and beautiful.

Our group consisted of 4 adults and 2 children and found the chalet and rondavel convenient. The lapa and kitchen were well equipped and a pleasant place to stay. The pool and wooden deck overlooking the river provide pleasant relaxation. There is also an adequate braai area and tables. I would recommend Little Carthage to any nature lover seeking peace and quiet.

Excellent location with beautiful nature. Beautiful hiking trails and beautiful waterfalls to visit. In the evening you can braai and sit by the boma while listening to the night sounds. Heather was very nice and although we were very early she still accommodated us. We hired the rondavel and the chalet and the only recommendation is to look at the showers with the water pressure that is very poor. Open-air kitchen is a winner.
Little Carthage is a gem deep in the bush with all the necessary facilities. One can get stuck there for a long time. The rondavel and loft area we booked is an ideal place to hang out with friends. The deck with a view, swimming pool, braai facilities, outside kitchen and meeting place made every visit that much more special. Took the dirt road very comfortably with a normal vehicle without any problems. The scenery is breathtaking and the tranquility is medicine for a tired body. The view from the deck during the day over the Olifants River, sunset is an experience. A pleasant cremation indeed. Pets are also allowed which is an added plus. The hospitality of the owner and staff is also appreciated.

Beautiful place, would go there again any day. For people with children it is the perfect place, the children can play around on the rocks the whole day long. Heather (the owner) is very friendly and quick to help with anything.

The place is clean and tidy, and is equipped with the necessary. We only had one problem while staying here, and that was the water supply in the bathroom. Furthermore, we had a very nice stay. Little Carthage is a perfect getaway from it all place. The position is absolutely beautiful and we were able to totally relax as a family. Having the whole place to ourselves was a bonus.

We travelled as a family (couple with a 4 year old boy). The place itself is just wonderful and a great getaway. Views to die for with a 5 star feel. The owner is a lovely lady who I cant write enough about - she is warm, friendly and couldn't do enough for you. Also a dam broke so we couldn't get out to a shop, so she and her very friendly father helped us out with beers and soft drinks. I recommend this place to each and everyone to experience. There is a R150 once-off entrance fee to the reserve per car.Please try and arrive while it is still light, as you have 8 km of dirt road and then 3.5 km of bush road to negotiate. You don't need a 4x4 but very low profile cars will battle.
