Rest and relaxation in the Free State between the mountains.
Big disappointment when we got there on Friday. The photos on the web are very beautiful. And a 4 1/2 star review on top of that. The staff is very friendly and helpful. But the pictures against the experience are a hoax! It felt like a 2 or 3 star, old guesthouse. Looking at the price, you want to at least get the value. The sad thing is that Mont d'Or is more expensive than the Clarens Protea Hotel, but the Protea Hotel is 10x better (already lived there for a weekend). I cannot express my disappointment in words. My husband's birthday weekend turned into a lot of tears and disappointment. We even wanted to come back home again on Friday.
We were a couple of women who went for a weekend getaway while the men hunted. Our children aged 2 months to 10 years came along. Was a lovely weekend and very comfortable to go with children. Very nice and tidy rooms and delicious breakfast. Would definitely recommend and visit again!
Tommy and his staff were very friendly and made us feel very much at home. We like quiet so the location was ideal for us to drive the few kilometers to the village instead and not be in the hustle and bustle. The view was beautiful and we can also recommend their spa. Breakfast was delicious with a large variety and we can also recommend the restaurant for dinner. Clarens is the cutest town if you just want to get away from the city for a bit!

Mont d'Or's staff are incredibly helpful and friendly, they go the extra mile to see their guests happy. We will definitely stay there again. I must add that their spa therapist is incredibly good.
On arrival we were offered a free upgrade to a more spacious (but older) room with a view of the valley, which we accepted. The room is nice and spacious, but has too few surfaces to unpack one's things if, like us, you are traveling for a long time. The beds were comfortable and the bathroom spacious. Unfortunately the hotel is just too far out of town to walk. The breakfast was so-so, but the reception staff were friendly and helpful.
Problem with the shower resolved speedily. Brilliant food. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Upon arrival, the third room was only adequate for our reservation: executive suite with king-size bed, fireplace, shower and bathtub. Original room had smoking area right in front of our room on balcony. Was moved to 4th room next day due to sewage smell in room. Ground floor rooms open onto the street and are not very safe. But staff were very friendly and helpful in accommodating us and keeping us happy.

In a nutshell. Great food, friendly staff, great spa, great view of the mountains. Two minutes' drive to Clarens town. Value for money and will return again.

Mont d'Or is conveniently just a bit far from the village. There are also advantages because no noise at night. Would have been nice to walk where you want to be, now have to drive every time.

Photos show well how the hotel looks, really nice view over the golf estate and mountains. Very well received. Als very neat and comfortable. Breakfast very good as expected. There is not much more than the spa, bar and restaurant and I think it is a bit expensive for that. Especially that vehicle parked outside on the street, although at least a quiet street. Security was not a concern for us at all because the village looks so peaceful.
Mont D'Or is a beautiful accommodation in Clarens with good facilities. Conveniently located just on the outskirts of Clarens with good views of the mountains East of Clarens (not all rooms have views). The room was comfortable and quite adequate with everything needed for a few nights. The restaurant offers good tasty meals on A La Carte basis. Be aware that most rooms can only be reached by stairs. Overnight parking is on the street.
The only negative was the guests visiting the restaurant and making a noise late at night.

Tommy went out of his way to get us alcohol free beer as they don't stock it. Perhaps something to consider for non-alcoholic customers. A problem when it rains, guests have to walk in the rain to get into the hotel's dining room and bar as it is not covered in any way. Slippery tiles outside are also a problem, especially for older people. Food was delicious and service quick and friendly.
We were kindly received and in the bitter cold our room was already pre-heated upon arrival. The on site restaurant food and service was very good.
Get a room with a fireplace - it was lovely in the cold weather. Little choice of TV channels, so more options preferred for relaxing after a delicious meal. Great location and view.

It is a lovely place to stay. Clarens is a cute town.
The hotel has the perfect location with the most beautiful view that I could not compare to anywhere else in the area. The food was top notch and the staff 5 star! Unknowingly, we went to have lunch at a place nearby and the owner told us to go back to the hotel for the sunset. Almost 4 hours later at sunset we ended the evening with the perfect meal (highly recommended) as well as breakfast the next morning with a cup of coffee on the porch. Unbelievable. I will go back for sure.
Mont d'Or Hotel is a beautiful Hotel. Very neat, very clean. The staff is very helpful and very professional. From the reception to the waiters - their service is really high quality and they are very competent in what they do. I would recommend them to anyone. The spa was heavenly and it is very peaceful there. So yes we were sad to have to drive again. And the bikes you can rent were a nice challenge because after every descent - there was a henge uphill. Thanks for the good recommendation. You did not disappoint us.

The hotel is tidy but the carpets need attention. Ashtrays outside and glasses etc. that had been standing outside since Saturday morning and had still not been cleaned or taken away by late Saturday evening - it's just something we noticed while walking past. The breakfast was well prepared, especially the breakfast porridge on Sunday morning. Location of the hotel was known to us beforehand so we realized that it is not in the center of town. Didn't feel unsafe at any point. However, value for money is a question because the accommodation was relatively expensive and although it meets expectations, above expectations for the price would be a better result.
Clarens is a very special place! We visited the most delicious breweries and restaurants. Fantastic getaway!

On arrival we were kindly received and our luggage was taken immediately to the unit. Everything was well explained, (call 9 for service). The breakfast is incredible and the rest of the meals are even better. Their prices are very reasonable and the value for money is very good. The location is so close to everything and yet it is so quiet there. Please feel to visit, just stay one day longer than you initially planned, we should have.
His restaurant also makes it easy on the premises. The room was tidy and clean, but felt they can start looking at the carpets in the sleeping area, otherwise it was good.

I agree with some of the other guests that value for money leaves you doubting whether or not there may be better options. I don't think you'll get a much better standard, perhaps just cheaper. We enjoyed the view from the balcony unit a lot, and the breakfast really was excellent. The parking is not 4 star and needs maintenance. Our unit's shower water didn't drain quickly enough and I reported it, believe it's been attended to. The spa's couples treatment was the highlight, I will definitely recommend it.

Rooms, service, meals, view everything was excellent. Sorry Hotel is so close to main road, speed bumps like at Golden Gate might help to reduce traffic noise, but I have to admit, in the rooms you don't hear traffic.
On arrival we received a friendly welcome from the receptionist and Tommy. They answered all our questions. We had to carry our own bags, even though Tommy asked someone to help us. Not really a problem, but for the 4 stars and the amount we paid, a service like that would've helped. Problems: parking is open and on the street. There is a guard that watches over the cars at night, and he was always on his feet. No carports, cars stand in the open sun the whole day (there isn't even a bit of pollution to stop the sun's rays). A little too little TV channels. The family room didn't even have Discovery or Animal Planet, or any children's channels. The room is neat and all the appliances are in a good and working condition. I think for the price we expected a bit more.
Will visit again. Location of hotel was good, as well as the restaurants in Clarens, especially Gosto.

Mont D'Or is the third hotel my husband and I have visited in Clarens/Golden Gate and in terms of value for money and services I expected more. The staff were very friendly and made us feel welcome but I expected more from a 4 star hotel: no one offered to take our bags up to our room on our arrival and I also feel the breakfast could be improved in terms of variety. I was on a diet and asked for fat free milk but they only had full cream milk, only scrambled eggs and fried eggs were available, I usually enjoy an omelette or poached egg.
Would recommend it. Friendly staff.

The reason why I give safety four stars is that, although there are guards at night, you are a little worried about your vehicle parked outside.
The location is good, rooms nice and spacious. Breakfast very good, but parking is open although there was a guard looking after car, it doesn't feel good. Staff very helpful and friendly, even at the time of the year when it is very busy and workers also want to be with their families. The tiles on the veranda of the hotel are very slippery and when it rains the extremely dangerous. Overall, a very nice overnight stay.

Room was not ready and it was just before 3pm. It was not checked whether everything was correct so there were too few towels.
Rooms and facilities neat and modern. We were extremely pleasantly surprised with the food at the restaurant. The fireplaces in the rooms as well as the electric blankets make it perfect for cold weather. Our favorite winter destination!
The rooms were well furnished and the breakfast was delicious. We also had a delicious dinner at Mont d'Or next to a nice big fire in the fireplace. We would easily stay there again.

We were not at all impressed with the rooms: Toilet broken, TV was faulty, bedding too small for the bed. Hot water in shower temperature varies all the time, then hot then cold. Manager and assistant had been helpful, within their limits of course. Bar staff cannot make mixed drinks. Our food was not right at two meals wrong orders.
Mont 'DOr went out of their way to make our stay as pleasant as possible for us. The facilities are very good and every request or inquiry was handled as if it was the greatest pleasure for the staff to help. We got the feeling that it was important to everyone that we enjoy our stay. All the staff always had a smile and time for us. The SPA was great. The service matches the view and the view is great. We all want to thank my Mont D'Or for our unforgettable week and we will visit them again soon.
We've paid less at hotels and spas and gotten more for our money. The menu for the evening didn't have that much variety and it was very expensive.
For me it was not a 4 star hotel. WiFi reception in the rooms is almost non-existent. Maintenance of the hotel is poor. Carpets, skirting boards etc. was in poor condition.

Beautiful hotel and spa facilities. Quiet environment. Within reasonable walking distance of the town centre.
The only criticism would be that Hotel residents did not have preference for lunch and had to take alternative measures to enjoy a Christmas lunch whilst non residents could attend.
The view from the hotel is absolutely breath taking. The rooms are beautiful and the service is excellent.
People very friendly, but it makes a lot of noise. The room was newly redone, but the pipes were leaking. The room stank constantly. We were first in a room with a fireplace. The room smelled very badly of smoke, so we moved to a room without a fireplace that smelled like sewage. I got allergies from the pillows. Breakfast was not very good. The air conditioning was noisy. We were not warned about the problem with tap water.
Room was dilapidated, a piece of plaster fell off the fireplace wall. The glass door to the back hallway was noisy and let in disturbing light during the night. The canopies over the verandas are totally inadequate and dangerous pools of water have pooled on verandas after rain - safety risk! They only swept the water away after our request. Breakfast was also not 4 star quality.

Clarens is a beautiful town. Mont D'Or Hotel's staff are friendly and hospitable. We enjoyed the stay. The rooms are neat and clean and equipped with air conditioning and electric blankets for the cold. The breakfast was tasty with a wide choice that varied daily. We will definitely consider Mont D'Or again if we visit Clarens.
We really had a wonderful time, the service was exceptional and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The fireplace in the room is a winner! The only less pleasant experience was the food, everything is full of garlic (and too much, not just moderately), and the haloumi and chicken strips were dripping with oil. Apart from the food, the accommodation and everything else was excellent.
The hotel is a noticeable landmark of the area and its location next to the Sentinel Mountain makes it picture perfect.

I will always go back to Mont D'Or Hotel. It is the most relaxing and beautiful place. The staff was the best, friendly and helpful. The manager was the most wonderful person and assist us with anything we required even helping out with our car as we had a little car problem. The room, food and drinks was the best not to mention the breakfast, delicious. I will go back next year and take my family with because you need to experience this place - a little heaven!!!
Reception is prompt, friendly and efficient. Rooms nicely furnished, although the walls are bare. Some water pipes make noise when guests use the bathrooms at night. Breakfast is good with a wide variety. The ala-carte menu offers a good variety at reasonable prices. The food is exquisite and tasty. The bar and room service are very good and the hotel generally offers a good experience. After the renovation that is currently underway, we will definitely consider a weekend there again. There were relatively few guests - as we prefer. Prof. Alfred Brunsdon, Lichtenburg.

The hotel does not even have secure parking. The service is good. I had to carry my own luggage: I don't mind doing that, but not if I pay R750 p.p.p.n. don't have to pay. Otherwise it was very nice! The view and my first experience of Clarens was unforgettable.
It was a wonderful place to visit, we were staying in Room 25 on Mountain View. Staff members were friendly to us. We really enjoyed our time here.
The location is ideal for a break away as is not too far from Jhb/Pta. Lovely room, friendly and helpful staff, body massages are to die for, and the most delicious breakfast spread. I had a great experience at the Hotel, the staff are very friendly. The food was great, both dinner and breakfast are of a high standard. I also had a full body massage at the spa, which was also fantastic. I must admit though, I was a bit disappointed when I got there because the pictures on all the websites for Mont D'Or Hotel make it look like the place is secluded in the mountains, which was not the case. But I soon forgot about that when I went into my room which was very beautiful.

The rooms each contain a double bed and twin single beds as well as an en-suite with a bath and shower. A cot is also available on request.
