The Marakele National Park is situated in the heart of the Waterberg Mountain range, and as its Tswana name suggests, has become a 'place of sanctuary' for an impressive variety of wildlife due to its location in the transitional zone between the dry western and moister eastern regions of South Africa. Marakele National Park is in a malaria-free area, approximately 12 km from the town of Thabazimbi.

Visitors flocking here can expect a welcoming mixture of tranquillity, delight and overall satisfaction, and the picturesque paradise in which the park is set forms part of the promise. Rare yellowwood and striking cedar trees, long and luscious bushveld and grandiose mountains in the background, huge committee’s of Cape vultures soaring through the royal blue skies, and exciting mixtures of wildlife trampling across the pains, certainly makes for a bush experience unlike any other.

The Tlopi Rest Camp is an unfenced camp allowing for a more ‘environmental’ camping experience, and is located approximately 17 km from the reception office.

Guests get to relax in comfortable furnished Safari Tents, while gazing across the banks of the Apiesrivierpoort Dam. Each tent has 2 single beds, a private bathroom with a shower, a washbasin, and a toilet, and a separate but private kitchen that is equipped with a fridge-freezer, 2-plate stove microwave, cutlery, crockery and cooking utensils, and electricity. The kitchen area also contains a dining table and chairs.

House rules
Please note: From 1 September 2017 all visitors over 18 years old will be required to produce an identity document, passport or alternative valid identification e.g. driver’s licence card for scanning upon entering/exiting the Parks.
A standard daily conservation fee of R240 for foreign visitors, R120 for SADC nationals with a valid passport, and R60 for South African Citizens and Residents with ID, will be required on entry to the park.

Although each Safari Tent has only 2 beds, an additional stretcher is available per unit but only on request. These are suitable for children. Occupants must inform the park directly in advance if they want such stretchers to be in place on their arrival.

There is no shop, restaurant, ATM facility or fuel available in the park.
Remember to bring charcoal or wood, as this is not available in the park.
Travelling times inside the park to get to any accommodation facility is between 07:00 and 18:00 and strictly no driving after 18:00.
No driving at night, after 18:00, is allowed in the park.
You will be warned at reception about roads that are inaccessible in the park. Should you drive on these roads and get stuck we will contact a towing company for you and you will be charged for recovery expenses.
You are not allowed to get out of your vehicle, except at places indicated to you on the map, by the receptionist.
Fines will be given if you drive off the roads.
Your vehicle can be searched at exit points.
A general speed limit of 30 km/h must be maintained within the park’s boundaries.
Please keep your entrance permit with you while driving in the park.
No fishing is allowed in the dam.
Be aware of baboons and vervet monkeys. Keep your tents closed when driving around and lock food in the tent’s cupboard. You may even turn the fridge slightly so that the door does not open easily. Don’t let anything lie around.
Please do not feed the animals. Vervet monkeys will soon become habituated to this and create serious problems in the future.
The key for the gates must be returned to reception on the day of departure. Alternatively you can leave the key at the points indicated to you by the receptionist.

The Kwaggasvlakte plains immediately north of the reception/office complex and camping site can be traversed in a normal sedan although certain areas might be a bit challenging. The entrance roads to the safari tent camp and bush camp and the narrow track up to the towers, can also be accessed with a sedan. Most other roads will present difficult terrain.

The use of drones inside (and over) our national parks is strictly prohibited.
No smoking is allowed inside the accommodation.
Remember, by feeding any wildlife you are signing their death warrant, as they become aggressive.
As outdoor lighting in camps is limited, a torch/headlamp is required when walking outside at night.
Hikers on day and overnight trails must always carry sufficient water.
Pets are not allowed in a National Park.
