Thaba Lapeng Mountain Escape means 'residence against the mountain' and offers comfortable self-catering accommodation. The accommodation enjoys magnificent panoramic views of the mountain ranges surrounding Clarens.

Thaba Lapeng is only 10 km from Clarens in the eastern Free State, on the R711 towards Fouriesburg, just before Surrender Hill. It is only 3 hours from Johannesburg, 4 hours from Durban and 2 hours from Bloemfontein and is an ideal stopover between the northern and southern provinces or on the way to Lesotho. It is great for staying over when visiting the Clarens/Eastern Free State area, or for attending weddings at one of the nearby wedding venues, or just for relaxing.

The accommodation consists of 3 fully self-catering, open-plan chalets which are adjacent to the main house. There are also 2 rooms which provide basic accommodation only which form part of the main house but have their own private entrances on the verandah.

The self-catering chalets each has a fully equipped kitchen with a dining room, a lounge and a bedroom set out on an open-plan basis similar to a bachelor unit. It is also fitted with an en-suite bathroom consisting of a bath, a shower and a toilet. All linen and towels are provided. Each chalet has its own braai facilities and porch. Cleaning services can be offered at an additional fee. This excludes Sundays and public holidays.

The 2 rooms are each fitted with a microwave and a coffee station with a kettle, coffee, tea, sugar, milk, rusks and mugs that are refilled each day. The Suikerbekkie room also has a fridge. All linen and towels are also provided. Each room is equipped with an en-suite shower, basin and toilet. There are no braai facilities dedicated to the rooms and the rooms are not equipped for a self-catering stay. Cutlery and crockery are provided and are changed each day.

All chalets and rooms have heaters installed with electric blankets fitted on the beds in the winter months.

A generator is available for load shedding.

We had a wonderful stay at Thaba Lapeng Mountain Escape. The room has everything you need. Situated 10km from Clarens. Stunning views of the mountains. The hosts were so friendly and checked in twice a day to make sure we had everything we needed. They gave advice on places to visit which really helped. The room is beautiful and set up so comfortably. We will definitely visit again.

This place is a gem. Run by Gerhard and Zelda, they offer the personal touch. Everything has been carefully thought of. Plugs next to beds, hooks in the bathroom, quirky notices to amuse. It was clean and well-designed. Everything worked as per the offer. The swimming pool was crystal clear. The view across the valley was stunning. Stay a night or stay a week.

The chalet was spotless, there were extra towels in the cupboard, and everything was tidy and in its place. The price was very high, you pay for the view on the mountain. The apartment is tidy inside, but if you want to barbecue and have a good time outside, you don't have terribly much privacy. It would be perfect for someone who wants to spend the night soon.

This was just what we needed. Unfortunately no WiFi on offer and with limited cell reception this was a bit of a negative as it was listed as an offered facility. Also there we no kitchen facilities available, only a microwave and a kettle, so not really a self catering facility. The huge guard dog was a bit on the scary side, so maybe not the best option if you have small children. Even with these drawbacks it was an amazing stay and knowing what to expect next time, I would most definitely make use of Thaba Lapeng again.

I will know where to go in the sequel, but I kindly suggest that better directions be used regarding the reception area, but other than that it was very nice! Thank you very much! I also just don't remember having to pay extra for the cleaning. Not that it's a problem, I'm happy to pay it. It was possible in the terms and conditions. Maybe just make it clear up front. I am very happy with Thaba Lapeng. The unit is modern and tidy. The view is beautiful. There were even flowers on the table and chocolates with fresh towels on my bed every day. I will definitely stay at Thaba Lapeng again.

We enjoyed it a whole lot. The location outside of town was ideal for us seeing as how we wanted to experience the peace there, not the buzz of town. We were welcomed and immediately helped to our room. Very homely feeling and the details in the rooms are full of love. Thank you Gerhard and Elize!

The place is located between Clarens and Fouriesburg which gives you the opportunity to drive quietly to Clarens or Fouriesburg, we made sure to arrive at Thaba Lapeng Mountain Escape before sunset to just "chill".

Our stay at Thaba was excellent, Gerhard arranged a braai fire for us when we weren't prepared. He also organised a microwave so we could reheat our food. Thank you!

Beautiful place, well taken care of. The view is calming and relaxing. Just outside of Clarens but close enough to pop in to town to have a shopping spree. Only downside is that it's self catering, would have preferred at least a breakfast , but they have coffee station, microwave and rusks .

We really enjoyed our stay at Thaba Lapeng and will definitely stay there again. It is a comfortable distance from Clarens and comfortably close to the tarmac road between Clarens and Fouriesburg. Unbelievably beautiful views, nice barbecue area and birdlife all contribute to a wonderful experience.

It was lovely staying here. The rooms are very neat and the view wonderful. Gerhard and Zelda are friendly and helpful. It really is value for money and we will definitely be staying here again. The fact that it's 12 km out of town makes it so peaceful and quiet. Just the thing if you're in need of rest for the soul and just want to switch off and recharge your batteries, but be close enough to attractions. Excellent!

We received excellent service from placing our reservation to the day of our departure. Gerhard and Shadow (who was always excited to see us!) braved the cold to greet us upon our very late arrival on Friday evening. Our room was cosy and warm with all the finest touches to make our stay memorable - handpicked flowers on our bed, sherry on arrival, toasty room and bed. Gerhard was very helpful with tips on where to eat and visit - every suggestion was spot on. The view of the sunrise against the mountain from our room was also spectacular and definitely the cherry on the cake. We will definitely be back soon and highly recommend a stay at Thaba Lapeng Mountain Escape!
