The cottage is built in French style with the iconic Clarens sandstone. It comprises 3 bedrooms, each with its own entrance. Of the downstairs bedrooms, 1 has a double bed and 1 has 2 three-quarter beds. Both share a bathroom fitted with a corner bath and shower. The upstairs bedroom contains a king-size bed and features an en-suite bathroom fitted with a bath and a shower. Each room has its own tea- and coffee-making facilities. The linen is luxury, crisp, white cotton percale, and soft towels are provided for each guest. Each bedroom contains a heater, electric blankets and extra blankets for those chilly winter nights. Both bathrooms have a heater.
The country-style open-plan kitchen and dining room have wonderful views of the property and the surrounding mountains. It is equipped with a cast-iron stove which is ideal for fires in the wintertime. The kitchen is fully equipped with a gas stove and convection oven, a fridge-freezer and a microwave. A TV with full DStv is provided upstairs. Guests have access to braai facilities as well as free Wi-Fi. Upstairs is accessed by an external staircase.
Secure parking is provided and the garden is completely fenced off, making it safe for young children. A large variety of bird life can be found as well including grey duiker, porcupine and hyrax. The property is home to a large overhanging cave with Bushman paintings and a perennial waterfall.

40 guests' feedbackThe French Cottage is an idyllic place to stay in nature. Trees and mountains are visible all the time. The silence is magical. The autumn in Clarens is breathtaking.
Stunning accommodation and location, with lots to do on the property.
10/10. It was worth every penny. Julia made us feel so at home. There was nothing we could think of that wasn't available in the place. Great quality beds and everything else. It was a luxurious experience. And then we were lucky enough to book in after it rained because there was a private waterfall a few meters from the spot where we could enjoy cocktails. The stream or waterfall is always audible in the house. The view is incredible. There isn't anywhere in Clarens that can beat this.
The place is very neat.
The cottage is beautiful and well furnished. Just keep the following 2 things in mind. The lower rooms' straps are connected to the outside of the house's living areas which was a big problem during our stay with loadingshedding and if there is loadshedding you have no water available in the house. The hostess was not at home but her father-in-law received us. He was very helpful and friendly.
This cottage is situated in an absolutely breathtakingly stunning and tranquil location. Food for the soul with the singing of birds and the sound of the little stream running past the cottage. The absolute peacefulness of it all takes you by surprise and all of a sudden you realise you can just relax and recharge. It was an incredible experience and new memories were made while staying there for 4 nights. To the owners, thank you for sharing your stunning place with the rest of the world it is really something special. The only constructive criticism I would like to offer the owners is to consider alternatives for loadshedding periods (e. g. some solar lighting or a small inverter).
This place has everything. Comfort, views to the hills, walks in the woods, the cave with its rock art and even birdwatching. Look out for the rare bald ibises roosting on the ledge above the cave. Clarens is walking distance, with its shops and cafes but it is so secluded you would not know.

The French Cottage was a wonderful experience for our family. The children particularly enjoyed the surroundings with the natural beauty, and the tree-rich grounds against the cliffs with easily accessible hiking trails are a winner.
I wish I was there right now! We all just loved it. So unbelievably beautiful. The nature takes your breath away. The cottage is so beautiful, truly French. The only downside is that the upstairs and downstairs are only connected via outside stairs and the kids were not comfortable to sleep alone, so we all had to bunk upstairs. We will most definitely be back, this time for a week! Thank you Julia.
The French Cottage is by far the most beautiful place to stay in Clarens. The surroundings are breathtaking and the house itself a fantastic treat. The house is beautifully furnished with everything one could possibly need. The beds are heavenly and the bedding excellent quality. Julia is a friendly and available hostess and communication was effortless. There are many hiking trails and great bird watching. It's a nice 15 minute walk to town (with a 5 year old), otherwise 5 minutes by car. We will be back for sure!
What a wonderful place to stay. The beds, linen and pillows are out of this world. It's so tranquil and all you hear are the birds. The walks are will worth going on.Close to town. Definitely a home from home and comes highly recommended to one and all.

Comfortable. Clean. Blanket had dirty mark, but linen itself was crisp and clean. Electric blanket and heaters in bathrooms helped a lot. Bathroom downstairs smelled terrible, but we gathered that it was from stagnant water and after the first shower was fine. The host welcomed us and then left us to enjoy our stays which we appreciated. Cottage was clean. Everything available which was necessary. Quaint cottage.

Well equipped. Lovely holiday home. Hiking trails from the front porch: mountain climbing in the poplar forest and to beautiful sandstone formations. Enjoy a glass of wine before the stove.
We as a family really enjoyed the weekend at The French Cottage. Arriving there, we were warmly received by Julia. We arrived in two cars and on arrival two remote control controls for the sliding gate had already been provided, without us telling her beforehand. We arrived after 19:00 in the evening and it was very cold. The house's curtains were already closed, all the beds' warm blankets were on, as were the water heaters in every room. The house was beautifully clean and literally provided for all your daily needs. It was like our own home only in another province. Many thanks to Julia for a wonderful time in Clarens and it is definitely worth staying there.

We had a wonderful stay, quiet and beautiful surroundings, went for a walk around the house and it was so worth it, the house itself is incredibly beautiful, inside is everything you need, down to muffin pans! Interior is stunning, nicest blankets! We will stay there again, for sure.

The house was beautiful, neat and spacious. Lovely garden with various areas where you can sit and drink coffee and make a fire. Julia was very helpful and friendly. Beautiful mountain and cave on the property.
We loved the setup, it was well equipped and we loved the attention to detail on the decorating. So neat, tidy and clean. Unfortunate that there isn't internal access to both floors but not critical. Julia was brilliant!
A stunning cottage! Felt like we were overseas, paying local tariffs, with just about everything we needed. It would have been nice to have soap in the bathrooms, rusks and some milk in the fridge (items that are usually supplied in most places we have stayed before).
The location is so fantastic and the place is so nice and clean and cosy. It is really a beautiful place that I can recommend and will visit again.
